Being born in Detroit, and the majority of my family still living there, it was important to me to look up the city's history and to discover and understand what went on during the Civil Rights Era. Just based off of where the state is and my bias towards it from me being there, racial riots and segregation in Detroit never crossed my mind. But, during my research I found that the race riot of 1967 was one of the most violent riots in the 20th century. But the riot was not because of police brutality, the riot was a build up of a multitude of different forms of oppression African Americans were going through during this time. Segregated housing, underemployment for African Americans and segregated schools helped drive the anger for the rioters.
